Our History

Founded in 1968 as a grading company in a rapidly expanding residential market, Sukut-Coulson quickly transitioned to become Sukut Construction. Sukut became a fast-growing company expanding into the public works arena and later entering the environmental services, renewable energy, and dams and reservoirs markets.

Sukut has been nationally recognized for its work on a variety of projects. These projects range from small to large and encompass earthmoving, dam construction, roadways, major drainage structures environmental clean-up, landfill openings and closures, and projects in the renewable energy field. In recent years, the firm has received more than 100 industry honors, including Contractor of the Year and Best Company to Work For.

1968 - The Beginning

Myron Sukut and Dick Coulson founded Sukut-Coulson, Inc. in October 1968. As a grading contractor, the company was well-placed to respond to the residential housing boom sweeping through Orange County at the time, providing grading services for many of the county’s major residential communities.

Sukut-Coulson quickly earned a reputation for dependable performance and became involved in many of the region’s major residential communities. As its experience grew, the company expanded beyond residential grading and began pursuing larger public works, dam, bridge, and transportation projects.

1970s - Expanding Into Public Works

Sukut-Coulson expanded beyond residential grading into public works, completing major dam, bridge, and transportation infrastructure projects. In 1974, the company became Sukut Construction.

Under Myron Sukut’s leadership, Sukut introduced professional consulting and engineering services to help clients evaluate the economic feasibility of complex geotechnical challenges and develop innovative, practical solutions. This combination of heavy civil construction experience, technical expertise, and problem-solving established the foundation for the company’s continued growth.

1980s - Growing Portfolio

As the 1970s drew to a close, Sukut completed the Bluebird Canyon Landslide repair in Laguna Beach, strengthening the company’s landslide repair and slope stabilization expertise as it entered the 1980s. Sukut continued developing these capabilities through complex hillside projects in La Jolla.

In the early 1980s, Sukut moved into its current corporate headquarters on Chandler Avenue in Santa Ana and extended its heavy civil construction capabilities throughout the western United States. The company broadened its dam, freeway, and infrastructure work through projects at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, on major sections of Interstate 15 in the Inland Empire, and for the City of Santa Margarita.

Sukut also applied its large-scale earthmoving capabilities to several world-class golf courses and resorts, including Pelican Hill and Aviara.

In 1985, Sukut established Sukut Equipment and Parts, its in-house heavy equipment division, to provide fleet management, equipment maintenance, repairs, and parts support to help keep Sukut’s projects operating efficiently.

1990s - Growth and Major Infrastructure

In 1990, Mike Crawford was named president of Sukut Construction, while founder Myron Sukut became chairman of the board. Crawford also became chief executive officer in 1999.

During the 1990s, Sukut opened its environmental services market, completing landfill projects throughout Southern California, while continuing its dam, bridge, and transportation infrastructure work.

A defining achievement was the challenging 26-mile Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor in Orange County. Sukut and its partners moved 67 million cubic yards of earth and rock—approximately one-fourth of the amount excavated for the Panama Canal—and completed the project within budget and 14 months ahead of schedule.

Sukut earned more than 20 project and safety awards during the decade, including recognition for completing 57,497 work hours without a lost-time incident on the corridor project.

Sukut and its joint venture partner completed an award-winning design/build 241-261 Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor ahead of schedule and under budget in Orange County, CA. 1998.

2000s - Market Diversification

In 2000, Sukut Construction was named Contractor of the Year by the Southern California Contractors Association and recognized by OC Metro as one of the “Best Companies to Work for.”

Throughout the decade, Sukut grew its public works capabilities in infrastructure, landfill expansion, and wastewater construction. By 2002, significant revenue growth had increased its workforce to approximately 300 employees.

In 2008, Sukut began exploring the emerging renewable energy market through solar site construction, laying the foundation for the company’s expansion into renewable energy construction during the following decade.

The company also upgraded its fleet with computerized emission-reduction engines and entered a long-term contract with the California Integrated Waste Management Board to remediate illegal landfills and waste-tire sites.

2010s - Building Across New Markets

During the 2010s, Sukut broadened its geographic reach and technical capabilities. After officially establishing its renewable energy market in 2010, the company applied its heavy civil expertise to increasingly complex renewable energy, environmental, water infrastructure, and large-scale joint venture projects throughout the western United States and beyond.

In 2018, founder Myron Sukut was named VIP of the Year by the Southern California Contractors Association in recognition of his contributions to the construction industry.

Today - Building What’s Next. Together.

In 2026, Eddie Juarez became president of Sukut Construction, building on the company’s legacy with a people-first approach and working alongside employees to lead Sukut into the future.

Today, Sukut is one of the nation’s leading heavy civil construction and general engineering contractors, serving public- and private-sector clients nationwide. A permanent Northern California location, established in the early 2020s, expanded the company’s statewide presence. Sukut delivers complex public works, private development, environmental construction, renewable energy, dam and reservoir, and alternative delivery projects.

Backed by experienced teams, an extensive in-house equipment fleet, and decades of expertise, Sukut has earned hundreds of awards and recognition from leading industry publications, including Engineering News-Record and Solar Power World. In 2025, the company also achieved one million work hours without an incident—reflecting its continued commitment to safety, value, and project excellence.
