ONTARIO, Calif. (July 7, 2003) -- Sukut Construction Inc., California’s premier civil engineering contractor, is becoming even more of a heavyweight – about 280,000 lbs. – to improve the efficiency of Southern California’s infrastructure and home-building industry. With the purchase of the largest, most productive, transportable excavator in the industry, Sukut is addressing the Southern California housing shortage with more-efficient construction equipment.
Sukut officials, along with other community and business leaders, will christen the new equipment on Wednesday, July 9, 9:30 a.m., at the intersection of Ontario Avenue and Chino Avenue in Ontario. This massive Caterpillar 5110B excavator, the first in California, is Sukut’s largest single equipment purchase in its 35-year history, costing well over $1 million. The only American-made excavator of its size, it weighs about 140 tons, equal to more than 90 Chrysler PT Cruisers. A significant advantage of this equipment is transportability. Sukut’s new excavator can be moved in days versus weeks.
“With this excavator, we bring the most-advanced mining technology to the world of infrastructure and home-building, putting Sukut at the industry forefront in rock excavation, “ Michael Crawford, President, Sukut Construction, said. “The significant investment in this equipment reinforces Sukut’s key philosophy – offering our customers award-winning quality, with reduced schedules and lowest total cost.”
“Sukut is taking a huge step for the entire industry with the use of this 21st Century technology,” said Gary Skoglund, Sales Representative from Johnson Machinery, the Caterpillar distributor in Riverside. “Caterpillar’s 5110B advanced hydraulic power enables the excavator to load material at 30 tons per minute.”
The excavator, using Sukut’s hallmark – clean-air engines – is initially being used to dig massive trenches to lay 144” diameter pipes at its Riverside Drive Storm Drain Project. This year-long flood control project is being conducted for the County of San Bernardino, which is part of the City of Ontario’s long-range flood control plan.
Founded in 1968, Sukut Construction has been recognized with more than 20 major honors, including the California State Environmental Cleanup Award. Sukut’s expertise includes residential developments, world-renowned golf courses, storm and drainage systems, and highways and roads throughout California.
