Company fosters job- site safety with first-time cash reward, presented to Grade Checker Mimi McLay
SANTA ANA, Calif. (December 2, 2004) -- As part of its zero accident safety program, Sukut Construction today presented a $10,000 reward to Mimi McLay. McLay, a Wildomar resident and grade checker for Sukut, was randomly chosen from among the many Sukut employees with perfect safety records.
When making the $10,000 presentation, Sukut CEO Michael Crawford explained, "One of Sukut's key values is safety, which is a major element in the quality work we offer our customers. This program raises the awareness of safety among all our employees, generating interest in the many ways each and every employee can take steps to avoid accidents and improve safety on the job site, which benefits employees, Sukut and all our customers."
McLay is a single mother of two sons who has worked for Sukut since March 2003. As a grade checker, she sets grade stakes to guide earthmoving equipment operators in sloping fill embankments to determine the location and quantity of cut or fill.
McLay works on the $28-million, 300-acre Lake Hills job site for 513 Brehm Communities homes, which is the largest rock moving job in all of Riverside County, with 60 employees moving 30,000 cubic yards of rock and earth per day. “Mimi is in tough territory.” Crawford said. “She works among more than 60 pieces of the industry’s largest equipment, including a three-story tall excavator, 16 scrapers, nine 50-100 ton capacity rock trucks, 12 bulldozers and the industry's largest front-end loader. She is an inspiration to all job-site employees that a zero accident record can be achieved when following proper safety guidelines.”
According to Safety Director Rick McCourt, Sukut strives for a zero accident safety record. Its current safety record is better than the industry average and has improved 28% in 2004.
