Sukut Joins Forces with Flatiron West Inc., on Major California Highway Project
CalContractor - August 2009
Sukut Construction Inc., in joint venture with Flatiron West Inc. of San Marcos, has been awarded a $57 million contract by Caltrans to construct the final segment of California Route 905 in San Diego County. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-June and be completed in early 2011.
The finished 905 Freeway will be a 12-mile route to facilitate primarily truck traffic between California and Mexico from the Otay Mesa border crossing northwest to Interstate 5. The contract calls for construction of five bridges and the final 2.5 miles of a four-lane freeway. Sukut’s portion of the contract totals $20 million and includes
site preparation, construction of retaining walls, and installation of underground infrastructure, according to Kevin Maher, project manager/estimator in Sukut’s public works division.
Sukut will move 1.3 million cubic yards of dirt and lay 21,000 feet of storm drainpipe. The 905 Freeway is an important commercial route that draws truck traffic prohibited at other border crossings. On the Mexican side of the crossing, 905 will link to East Tijuana highways. Sukut Construction, Inc, is California’s largest mass
excavation and
grading contractor, moving 150 million cubic yards of earth a year.
It is ranked within the top 300 largest contractors in the nation. Its projects range from highway construction to residential grading to wastewater management systems. Projects include the construction of four, 60-acre wastewater treatment ponds holding more than 1 billion gallons for the Los Angeles Sanitation District and a seismic retrofit of the San Pablo Dam for the East Bay Municipal Water District. It is also charged with the site development for a section of the U.S.-Mexico border fence and is widening a 1.3-mile segment of State Route 76 in Fallbrook and straightening its alignment.
Sukut, which turned 40 this year, is headquartered in Santa Ana, California, with offices in Oceanside, Los Angeles, and Riverside, California. For further information, call 1-888-785-8801, or go to www.sukut.com
